A piece of work created for his Masters Degree in Composition, this represents a re-scoring of a well known trailer for the 2017 Movie: Blade Runner 2049.  It attempts to convey the hostile and dystopian subject of the movie in an identifiable, yet strangely appealing way. 

Technical Notes - from Tim

This piece was composed to be purposefully ambiguous, to match the theme of the film and trailer. To achieve this, I used a repeated harmonic pattern of C minor to Ab major 7, the contrast of major against minor deprives the listener of a tonal center.

I layered the dark-sounding piano with a pulsing, sawtooth synth with a slow filter sweeping LFO that glides between notes, designed in Native Instruments’ Massive synthesizer.

The lead piano at 1:00 is doubled by a detuned, fuzzy synth lead, the melody also helps provide ambiguity as it uses the B natural against a C minor chord, which causes a great deal of tension within the track.

The climax of the piece at 1:40 features both electronic drums and orchestral drums, I included the electronic drums as they helped provide the ‘retro-funk’ sound to match the visuals, the orchestral drums sounds are from LA Modern Percussion.
